What is the working principle of drug tests?
Delta 8 THC is one of the minor cannabinoids found in
marijuana and hemp plants. There are not any high-delta-8 THC cannabis strains.
This compound is a byproduct of delta9 THC's degrading over time. Delta 8 THC
has a more stable and milder intoxicating effect. Although it does get you
high, the sensation is not as intense as delta 9.
In lower doses of delta 8 THC, the cognitive effects can be
mildly energizing and elevating. Higher doses can cause sedating effects. Delta
8 THC has a low risk of paranoia or anxiety, so it is why so many people are
using it.
Your body will metabolize a substance you have taken for
recreational or medical use to see the effects. The metabolites are metabolized
by the liver and remain in your bloodstream, urine, saliva, or hair. Even after
the effects of delta-8
in urine are gone, their 'track' can still
be found during drug tests.
Workplace drug testing is designed to detect metabolites
of illegal substances. If you are a cannabis user, you may need to be tested
for drug metabolites at work. Delta 9 THC can be easily detected by drug tests
they don't check for THC levels. They instead look at the metabolites your body
produces after the liver has processed THC.THC-COOH is the most common
metabolite. It can remain with you for many days, or even weeks, depending on
how heavy you are.
THC is a fat-soluble compound that dissolves in fats.
Your body can't eliminate it as quickly as water-soluble compounds. Drug
testing aims not to determine how much you've consumed but rather, it's to
prove that you have used drugs.
What substances
are drug tests looking for?
Most drug tests can detect these substances:
·
Alcohol
·
Amphetamines
·
Barbiturates
·
Benzodiazepines
·
Cocaine
·
Marijuana (Delta 9
THC)
·
Opioids
Different types of drug tests
Two types of urine tests are used to detect illegal
substances in drug tests.
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), a test that
uses both mass spectrometry and gas chromatography, is more precise but takes
longer and requires more precision. The Immunoassay (IA Test) is a quick
biochemical test that checks for macromolecules in a sample. It can often
produce inaccurate results.
The hair follicle and blood tests are also available. THC
can also be found in hair after 90 days. During road control or after an
accident, blood and saliva tests detect illicit drugs in drivers.
Is Delta 8 THC detected on a drug test?
Yes. Delta 9 and delta 8 are very similar in
construction. Delta 8 THC, a weaker analog to delta 9, is simply the same as
delta 9. Both have intoxicating qualities and can be detected on drug tests
because they are processed in the same way. The urine tests can't tell the
difference between delta9 and delta8 THC. Both compounds end up in the same
metabolite (THC COOH), so the test will detect both.
Short story: A
drug test can detect delta 8 THC if consumed recently.
A fun fact?
Drug tests can also detect metabolites of other
cannabinoids such as CBG and CBN. Professional athletes cannot use CBD isolate
powder if this is why they are not allowed to compete in important events. The
maximum blood level of THC-COOH is 50 ng/ml. Delta 8 THC and its metabolites,
however, have a lower cutoff (30 ng/ml). You could easily fail the IA test. You
can request that your employer repeat the test using gas chromatography, which
only checks for delta 9 metabolites.
